D93-95: Floor + Welding + Update

I'm back! After 3 months of training, Ride the Rockies has come and gone. Turned into a shorter week than planned because of a knee injury, but still had 4 good days and 300 miles on the bike.
Here's a pic of my brother and I at the top of Independence Pass. This was after 6000 ft of climbing, most in the last 15 mi. I've been wanting to climb this pass for years and was excited to finally get the chance.

On to the build progress. I've spent a little time over the past few days getting the floor finished and working on finish welding the frame. I'd say I'm 95% complete on welding... but I keep finding more that needs to be finished.
I'm also working on the upper a-arm support to eliminate the "single shear" in the current design and figuring out where the shocks are going to mount.

  1. Congrats on the cycling the rockies.

Looking good, welding seems to take forever.
I have my chassis clamped to an engine stand and the other end with a pole welded to it that allows for free rotation. That way i can spin the chassis for easier welding - seems to still be a PITA to get most of the spots.

I am still waiting for my custom rear uprights to come in, Though i did get my floor. I put swedges into it to stiffen the seat area - NFI if it will work but it adds minimal weight and it may give me something extra in strength there.

    cheers,

    1. Yeah... I'm becoming an expert at welding in spots I can hardly see. Looking forward to having it all done and being able to move on. I saw your pics using the engine stands, very clever. Any progress on that gas tank? I'm still waiting to see your solution before starting mine.

  2. I have a basic design but have not progressed it. I have a glut of work with the guy who will make it. Had a look at a similar design on the weekend (turned out be nearly the same as what i designed) and that one has been working for a few years no problem.

Will get it sorted this weekend and put something on my blog.

    Cheers,
    Taffy

  3. It’s nice to hear that you’re doing things to improve and please yourself. :D How about your build, how did it go? Actually I’m a bit scrupulous like you, always finding defects and what else needs to be done. I’m sure you also didn’t want to compromise the reliability of whatever it is you’re making. Nice!
